The Mitsubishi Chemical Center for Advanced Materials (MC-CAM) at UCSB has been extended for an additional 4-year term, from September 1, 2018 through August 31, 2022. The renewal will continue the successful research alliance between UCSB and Mitsubishi Chemical through 21 years of partnership. Under the terms of the renewal agreement, Mitsubishi Chemical will invest at least $8.0M in UCSB, including a fund of $400,000 to continue endowed graduate student fellowships in the departments of Materials and Chemical Engineering.

UC Santa Barbara’s Materials Research Laboratory (MRL) has received its sixth consecutive multimillion-dollar grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to fund six years of operation as an NSF Materials Research Science and Engineering Center (MRSEC). UCSB is one of eight institutions to receive such an award this year. “These awards are representative of the incredibly broad, highly multidisciplinary research portfolio spanning all of the division-supported research areas,” said Linda Sapochak, director of the NSF Division of Materials Research. “These multidisciplinary awards will be forging new materials research frontiers through team-based development of novel electronic and photonic materials relevant to future high-tech applications.” Materials science is an interdisciplinary field that incorporates knowledge from several disciplines, including physics, chemistry, life science and engineering, to gain a better understanding of how the micro- and nano-scale structure of materials can influence their function and performance. Incorporated into these studies is research into processing and fabrication, and the development of new, high-tech materials. Professor Glenn Fredrickson has been selected for the 2017 Materials Theory Award of the Materials Research Society.
The Materials Theory Award recognizes exceptional advances made by materials theory to the fundamental understanding of the structure and behavior of materials.
Professor Fredrickson will be be presented with this award "for pioneering the development of field-theoretic computer simulation methods and their application to investigate and design self-assembling polymers and soft materials.”
